WORKSHEETS

As your Girl Scout completes an activity, note the date on the badge worksheet. When the required number of activities have been completed, sign the worksheet, and give it to the Troop Leader. It would be good idea to keep a copy of the worksheet in the badge journal. The Troop Leader will probably ask your Girl Scout to demonstrate an activity or bring something that she has made in order to share her experiences with the rest of the troop. The troop leader will also probably ask to review the journal to see how the badge was earned. Information in the journal may help another Girl Scout, who wishes to work on the same badge, organize her work. This type of sharing helps to build self-confidence and cooperation.

Your Girl Scout should not be pressured to complete a badge that she really does not wish to finish. Also, she should not feel that having more badges than someone else is a measure of who has done better. She is, however, encouraged to try a variety of activities. Unlike Brownie Try-Its, where the emphasis is on new experiences, Junior badges are more complex and require more work and thought by the Girl Scout. Juniors gain a modest level of proficiency through earning badges, but are, by no means, experts on a subject. They are primarily designed to challenge the Junior Girl Scout to think for herself, to create a plan of action, carry it out and to have fun. Junior Girl Scouts are also learning to take more responsibility for their actions - and inactions.

Planning and working badges at home is a step in that direction. Parents/guardians should offer encouragement and advice, rather than direction and leadership.

CHAPTER 3
SIGNS AND OTHER RECOGNITIONS

SIGNS

Junior Signs are special recognitions which require more planning and work than a badge. There are currently four Sign recognitions. They are: Sign of the Rainbow, Sign of the Sun, Sign of the Satellite and Sign of the World. The Signs of the Rainbow, Sun, and Satellite are described in the Junior Badges and Signs book. The Sign of the World is described in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook. Care should be taken when planning the activities required for a Sign. All Signs require that certain badges be completed as part of the completion process. However, there is some overlap in the particular badges which will satisfy the requirements.

For example, the badge "Sky Search" from the World of Today and Tomorrow will satisfy a requirement for the Sign of the Satellite or the Sign of the Rainbow. However, the badge can be used to satisfy requirements for only a SINGLE Sign. If it used to satisfy a requirement for the Sign of the Satellite, then it cannot be used for the Sign of the Rainbow. Therefore, care should be taken in deciding upon which Sign is applicable to any particular badge.

To assist you in avoiding such problems, the Reference table in Chapter 4 lists the Signs to which each badge is applicable. If a badge is applicable to more than one Sign, the recommended Sign is listed first.

The Sign of the Satellite requires performing some activities from a badge, but not the entire badge. You may complete an entire badge and count some of the activities toward a Sign (e.g., do all of Eco-Action instead of just the required activities for the Sign) but you may not apply the completed badge toward another Sign.

JUNIOR AIDE PATCH

The Junior Aide Patch can be earned while helping a Brownie Troop or individually registered Brownie Girl Scout perform bridging activities. The activities for this patch are simple, yet require coordination with Brownie troop leaders. Your Junior Girl Scout leader may know of a Brownie troop that needs some bridging help. There may even be a sister troop that your Junior can work with.

If she is interested in earning this recognition, the first thing to do is to notify her Troop Leader and ask her for advice and assistance in locating a Brownie Troop to work with. If the Troop Leader cannot help, then ask for the name and number of a higher authority to whom you can go for help. This would be at the neighborhood or service unit level. You may even have to go to a field director at the local Girl Scout Council for assistance.

JUNIOR LEADERSHIP PIN

The Junior Leadership Pin is a recognition which is described in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook. To earn this recognition, your Girl Scout needs to complete four activities which need to be done in sequence. Your Girl Scout should consult with her Troop Leader for some of the activities. For individually registered Girl Scouts, contact the local Girl Scout council for assistance. Your Girl Scout may be able to work with a local Junior troop.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION WORKSHEETS

The following worksheets will help you to plan and document your Girl Scouts progress in earning these special recognitions. They are much more detailed than the generic badge worksheets, and should help you and your Girl Scout plan the activities needed for each recognition.

Please remember that these are brief summary worksheets that allow you to help track your daughter's progress. You MUST read the badge requirements in the appropriate book to know exactly what is required.

CHAPTER 4
REFERENCE TABLE AND WORKSHEETS

TABLE

This table lists all of the Junior badges found in the Badges and Signs book (1990 edition) and all of the Junior badges found the Junior Girl Scout Handbook (1994 edition). It lists the page number where the badge description can be found, which world the badge is related to, the number of required activities and the Signs to which the badge can be applied.

Page numbers which are followed by an asterisk (*) refer to pages in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook. All other page numbers refer to the Badges and Signs book.

In the World column, the entries have the following meanings:

W = World of Well-Being
T = World of Today and Tomorrow
A = World of the Arts
P = World of People
O = World of the Out-of-Doors
H = Badges found the Junior Girls Scout Handbook

If the badge can be applied to more than one Sign, then the first one listed is the recommended choice.

When your Girl Scout earns a badge she may check it off on the list to keep track of the recognitions that she has earned.
